Which type of heating oil should I order?

There are two main types of heating oil used in the UK: Kerosene 28 and Gas Oil (Red Diesel). Choosing the right one is essential for your boiler to run efficiently and safely.

⚠️ If in doubt, don’t guess, using the wrong fuel can damage your system.

Two main types of heating oil

Kerosene 28 (also known as "28-second oil")

  • The most common fuel for domestic boilers
  • Clear to pale yellow in colour
  • Often simply referred to as “heating oil”

Gas Oil (also known as "Red Diesel" or "35 second oil")

  • Usually used in older heating systems, commercial boilers, or agricultural machinery
  • Dyed a bright red colour to differentiate it from regular diesel

How can I tell which oil my system uses?

  • Check the sight gauge on your oil tank:
    • Yellow-ish fuel likely means Kerosene
    • Bright pink/red fuel likely means Gas Oil
  • Look at boiler documentation or labels on your tank
  • Ask your service technician if you're unsure, they’ll be able to confirm the right fuel type

💡 Tip: Consider a heating oil additive

We recommend adding an oil additive to Kerosene 28, or choosing Premium Kerosene (which includes the additive). It can help by:

  • Promoting a cleaner burn
  • Extending the shelf life of your oil
  • Reducing sludge and water build-up in your tank

You can add this option when placing your order with BoilerJuice.
