BoilerJuice supplies households and businesses with a variety of heating oils, including Standard Kerosene, Premium Kerosene, Premium Kerosene AGA designed for oil-fired cookers, and low-carbon HVO for sustainable heating.
Choose the right heating oil based on your boiler type and property setup.
Modern boilers use Kerosene, the standard and most efficient fuel. For better performance and a cleaner system, consider Premium Kerosene. Gas Oil (Red Diesel) is for commerical or older boilers. For a renewable option, look at HVO.
Check your boiler manual, tank label, or consult your heating engineer to ensure the right choice.
Kerosene and Premium Kerosene differ in additives and benefits. Standard Kerosene provides reliable heat, while Premium Kerosene has additives that improve efficiency, reduce deposits, and keep boilers running cleaner. Premium Kerosene burns more cleanly, lowering emissions and prolonging your heating systems lifespan, making it more a efficient and environmentally friendly choice.
Heating oil should always be stored in a certified, bunded plastic or steel designed tank for domestic use, installed on a stable, non-combustible base and positioned safely per OFTEC guidelines. Keep all openings sealed, inspect regularly for leaks or damage, and have an OFTEC-registered technician check the system annually. Avoid placing tanks near drains or watercourses to prevent environmental harm. Proper storage ensures safety, efficiency, and protection.
Heating oil lasts about six months when stored properly. Exposure to air and moisture can cause it to degrade. Using premium fuel or additives and keeping the tank full and clean can help. Oil up to six months old is usually safe, but older oil should be inspected or tested before use.
You can reduce heating oil consumption by maintaining your boiler, improving home insulation, and using heating controls efficiently. Regular servicing, upgrading to a modern condensing boiler, and adding fuel additives can improve efficiency. Simple habits like lowering your thermostat and heating only occupied rooms also help cut usage and costs.
Improve home heating efficiency by insulating your home, servicing your boiler, and using programmable thermostats or smart controls, as well as using a timer. These steps improve heating efficiency. Small changes, like lowering your thermostat and bleeding radiators, also help. Closing doors and curtains can reduce energy use and costs, to utilise heat zoning. Seal any gaps and cracks to stop heat loss. Consider ordering fuel in bulk to cut delivery emissions.
You should service your boiler once a year to keep it running safely and efficiently. An annual service by an OFTEC-registered engineer helps prevents breakdowns, maintain performance, and ensure your system is burning heating oil cleanly. Regular servicing can also extend your boiler's lifespan and reduce fuel consumption, saving you money over time.
If your boiler is older or used heavily during winter, a mid-year check-up may also be worthwhile to ensure everything stays in good working order.
Yes- UK schemes like ECO4 , the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, and the Great British Insulation Scheme offers grants for insulation, heating upgrades, and low-carbon systems. Local Warm Homes grants may also be available to improve energy efficiency.
For energy savings, the ideal thermostat setting is around 18-20°C when you're at home and about 15-16°C when you're asleep or away. Every 1°C reduction can save up to 10% on heating costs, so keeping temperatures consistent and avoiding overheating helps maximise efficiency. You can also use our Smart Monitor to help you track your oil levels in real time, ensuring you use fuel efficiently and never run out unexpectedly.
